Everything You Need to Know About Fishing Licenses for Chris's Guide Service

Navigating the licensing requirements is the final step before your arrival on the Olympic Peninsula. Whether you are planning to target Steelhead on the Salmon River or enjoy a day of surf perch fishing on the coast, having the correct documentation ensures a smooth and legal experience. Chris's Guide Service is committed to helping you understand these rules so you can focus entirely on the water.

Who Needs a License?

In Washington State, every angler aged 15 and older is required to have a valid fishing license in their possession while fishing.

  • Youth (Under 15): Children age 14 and under do not need a license to fish. However, they are still required to have a Catch Record Card (CRC) for species like Salmon and Steelhead.
  • Assisting Others: Adults who are only helping a child (e.g., baiting a hook or removing a fish) but are not actively fishing themselves do not need a license.

Freshwater vs. Saltwater Rules

The type of license you need depends on where we will be spending our time.

  • Freshwater License: Required for the Salmon River, Cook Creek, Quinault River, and the Queets River.
  • Saltwater License: Required for our shore-based perch fishing along the Washington coast.
  • Combination License: This is the most popular choice for travelers. It covers both freshwater and saltwater, as well as shellfish (like razor clams).

2026 License Pricing & Packages

Washington implemented updated fee structures in July 2025. Below are the estimated costs for the current 2026-2027 season (valid April 1 – March 31).

License TypeResident (WA)Non-ResidentAnnual Combination~$74.37~$170.00Annual Freshwater Only~$39.95~$115.851-Day Combination~$14.90~$27.052-Day Combination~$20.98~$39.193-Day Combination~$25.53~$48.30

Note: Annual licenses for Seniors (70+) are significantly discounted, often costing as little as $10–$20 depending on the package.

Important Endorsements for 2026

As of January 1, 2026, additional endorsements are required for specific locations and species:

  1. Columbia River Salmon/Steelhead Endorsement (CRSSE): If your trip includes specific tributaries of the Columbia, this $8.75 endorsement is mandatory for all anglers 15 and older.
  2. Catch Record Cards (CRC): When fishing for Salmon or Steelhead, you must have a CRC. Your first card is free with your license, but you must specifically request it.

Where to Buy Your License

We recommend securing your license at least 10 days before your trip if buying online to allow time for your physical Catch Record Card to arrive by mail.

  • Online: Visit the WDFW Licensing Website.
  • Local Retailers: You can purchase licenses in person at Amanda Park Mercantile (near the Quinault), the Rain Forest Resort Village, or various sporting goods stores in Aberdeen.
  • Mobile App: The MyWDFW app allows you to carry a digital license and even "e-tag" your catch, though you must choose between "Paper" or "Digital" at the start of the season.
